The SISTA Project is a peer-led social skills training intervention for African American women with the primary aim to reduce HIV sexual risk behavior.

Classes range in size from 10-12 women in five 2-hour sessions.

Women will improve in the areas of:

  • Ethnic and Gender Pride
  • Consistent Condom Use
  • Sexual Behavior Self Control
  • Communication with Partner
  • Assertiveness in Protecting Oneself

Topics of the class include:

  • Ethnic and Gender Pride
  • HIV/AIDS Education
  • Assertive Skills Training
  • Behavioral Self Management Training
  • Coping Skills

Factors such as inequality in relationships, socioeconomic stresses, substance abuse and psychological issues increase a woman's risk of HIV infection.  In addition, some STDs greatly increase the chances of getting and transmitting the HIV infection.
